What is search engine marketing?

Search engine marketing involves strategically optimizing the elements of your web site and your web campaign in such a way that your site becomes popular in the major search engines.

There are two primary types of search engine marketing, the paid method, or pay-per-click, and the unpaid method, natural search engine results.

The paid method, or pay-per-click, involves bidding and paying for specific search engine rankings. One advantage to using pay-per-click is that you can quickly dial up huge responses, for example 200-500 clicks per day, which allows you to quickly test ad copy and response rates. One major disadvantage is the price–you are directly paying for each and every click you receive.

There are many changes taking place in the top search engines. Google, Yahoo, and MSN are all adapting to the many transformations occuring within the search industry. Because of these changes, I thought I would take the time to give you an overview of what’s taking place within the market and how it affects you as a webmaster. To begin, let’s start with Google.

Back in 2003, Google would index and crawl the web about once a month and everything would change all in one shot. WebMasterWorld would actually name these updates with names like Brandy, Florida, and Bourbon.

When the Internet was young, ten years ago, one of my most pleasurable online activities was to go to a site’s link page and follow the links to some cool sites. Equally fascinating was the prospect of having my site listed on some of those links pages, which prompted me to get into the activity now known as reciprocal linking, or trading links with other sites.

My, how times have changed! Now whenever a reciprocal link request lands in my “in box” I delete it immediately just like other pieces of obvious spam. How did this come to pass? As soon as it became known that Google’s PageRank system rewarded sites for incoming links, the trading of links, and even the buying and selling of links, heated up and most webmasters got into the act.

The vast majority of website traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines, Yahoo, MSN and Google (although AOL gets nearly 10% of searches, their engine is powered by Google’s results). If your site cannot be found by these search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, you will miss out on the incredible opportunities available to websites provided via search – you get people who want what you have visiting your site - for free. Whether your site provides content, services, products, or information, search engines are the gateway to the web for most internet users. With the amount of free traffic available it is obvious that the top places on any of the major search engines are very lucrative pieces of internet real-estate.

So what do I need to get started?

Search engine marketing is an incredibly lucrative and incredibly under-utilized aspect of any online marketing campaign.

When the internet was in its infancy, those companies who managed to get to the top of search engine rankings naturally were rewarded by high numbers of clicks and sales.

As a result of this, massive numbers of webmasters tried to outwit the search engines and their competition by discovering the formulas for site search engine rankings, and created methods to circumvent the natural and honest method of search engine optimization.

Link Strategies — One Of The Most Important Ways To Increasing Your Website Traffic

By Tim Frisch

If you didn’t know already, having the right link campaign in place for your website could make the difference between having a “door stop” or a “door opener.” Links can come in many forms, they can come from websites, search engines, search directories, articles, press releases and many other places. Some of these other places could in “bad neighborhoods”, also sometimes referred to as link farms, and could get your website rankings penalized. You could view this kind of linking as “bad association”. Some directories are solely there to cheat not only the system but you too. I have found that working within the system, although it changes frequently, is best working within their guide lines.

Some people have asked me, if they need reciprocal linking in place to get optimum search engine rankings. The short answer is yes you need a link strategy in place. In reality you need high quality links linking to you site. But most people of course will want a link going back to their website, hence the name reciprocal linking. But how might it effect your website if a link is coming in and not going out. If you are planning a reciprocal link strategy, you need to plan on giving a link back to the giver. You will gain better link popularity if you have links coming to your website. The links going out do not effect your link popularity. So what is link popularity and why do I care? It is one of the main determining factors or algorithms search engines use to determine your rankings.

How to Improve Your Google Page Rank September 27, 2006

The only way you can increase your Google Page Rank (PR) is to increase the number of links to your site(inbound links). Thus you need to get other webmasters to link to your site, either by paying for the link or by some other method.

It is better to have high PR sites link to you than low PR sites because high PR sites “push” more PRs to their links. Why? Well, because they have more PR to give in the first place. But the number of links per page is also important because if a page has a lot of links, less PR will then flow into those links. Think of it as water flowing through holes, the more holes, the less water flows through each hole.

Adding a blog to your domain can be a great way to score inbound links. You’ll want to write things that truly connect with people, and that also result in a direct, specific and quantifiable action — like a link, a Delicious social bookmark, or a vote at news aggregation site Digg.

Each link, bookmark and vote you earn has a tendency to create others, depending on how well your copy offers something of real value to the reader. Check later for how well you did, and keep at it.
